reflection

Political Science class served as a way to make me more aware of politics. Before the class I didn't really know all that much about politics, and it never really interested me. After the class, I feel like I am more informed on the subject. I feel like now I have a better ability to form political opinions and be more involved in political conversations whenever they may arise. I took a couple skills out of the class. In general, I took away technological skills that I can use in the future. I think that being more internet savvy will be very helpful in the future.

The Election

I think that media had a huge in this year's Presidential election. In particular I think that Saturday Night Live played a huge role. I read an article that discussed the percentage of people that watched the shows and voted one way or another. Most people that watched voted for Obama, further more more people said that the skits made them vote for Obama, versus voting for McCain. I think that SNL had such a big impact, because the skits were very one sided. While they poked a few jokes at Obama and Biden, the majority of their skits were centered around the Republican nominees, Sarah Palin in particular. I think it was influential because it was so focused on one candidate instead of another.

Countries all over the world are celebrating Obama's election to President. I think that this election made other countries have a higher opinion of the United States. I think it's such a huge impact for several reasons, the most obvious being that Obama is the first African-American President. Other countries see this as a triumph in American history. In addition, Obama is vastly different from our present President. Other countries are thinking that perhaps relations between themselves and United States can change. I think in the eyes of most other countries of the world the United States achieved a great victory with this election.

So Much To Say

Check Out Some Images from the Final Presidential Debate of 2008

So Much To Say

The CNN Political Ticker has one main focus: politics. It's hard to create a summary of all the blog has discussed in the past week, when frankly they've discussed it all. Today for example, there were entries from both parties about the outcome of the debate, numerous entries about "joe the plumber," updates on both candidates new advertisements and an entry about Obama's dealings with ACORN, just to name a few.

I guess I'll start by summarizing the outcome of the debate. According to CNN polls, the Americans surveyed believe Barack Obama won the final debate last night. In that poll, 58% of viewers believed Obama won, with 31% believing that McCain came out victorious. I personally disagree, as I believe that McCain was more aggressive and informative in this debate than any previous. While according to the Political Ticker, I disagree with the majority, McCain got good reviews, just not quite as good as Obama's.

The Ticker has tireless mention of "joe the plumber", as he was mentioned 11 times in the debate last night. I was a little fuzzy as to what this referance was all about until I read one of the Ticker's entries. A tall, bald man in Ohio asked Obama about his tax plan, because he was planning on purchasing a company worth over $250,000. He was concerned that he would be taxed more heavily because of this. Obama responded that he wanted to lower taxes for those who had less money so that they would be able to put more money into companies like the one this man intends on purchasing. McCain disagrees with this approach. Since that meeting in Ohio, "joe the plumber" has become a common thread in the election.

CNN Political Ticker

The CNN Political Ticker follows many aspects of American politics. Currently, it's mainly centered around the presidential debate. It also discusses the current economic crisis. It has tons of entry each day about all different political stories. If there's anything happening in politics, it's on this blog.

This blog has way more posts each day then any other blog I've looked at. This blog isn't biased. While the entries themselves may be biased, it provides articles that support both sides in the presidential election. The blog posts are not all written by the same person, so you get many different opinions on similar topics.

One entry on the blog describes which candidate is getting which electoral votes as of now. New research is showing that more states are tending towards Obama at this time. The entry has an up to date map of which states are voting or leaning which way. I think that a great deal can still change between now and election day. While those key states are tending towards Obama now, nothing is secured until the actual election takes place. We'll just have to wait and see who wins this presidential election.

CeliacChicks & Taylor Swift

CeliacChicks is a blog dedicated to providing information about how to avoid gluten. The blog explains what celiac disease is as well as food alternatives for people living with celiac. The creator of the blog gives away free products on occasion. She also alerts people of different happenings or events and provides information on restaurants that have a gluten free option menu. Currently they are doing a world-wide tour of gluten-free eateries. It's really cool and I'm sure it will come in handy for me sometime in the future.

Taylor Swift
communicates with her fans through a myspace blog. She tells stories about her day and shares her feeling with her fans. She talks about her shows as well as her upcoming album. This blog is kind of like the story of her life. All she does is write what's going through her head when she sits down at the computer. It's really cool to see an artist in today's industry who writes a down-to-earth account of her daily life. It allows for her fans to feel as if they know more about her. As a fan, I find it interesting reading about how her life is going. Many of her fans comment on her blog posts, sending her well wishes and discussing their opinions of her music.
